Prep Flag Football The state-by-state record of girls' high school flag football sanctioning

When is girls flag football season?

It depends on the state. There is no national season: each state association decides when its girls' flag football season runs, and the answer ranges from August to June. Among the states we have checked, 12 play in the fall, 14 in the spring and 1 in the winter, and in Washington schools choose.

The table lists every state whose association has sanctioned the sport or runs a recognized pilot, and whose season we have confirmed from the association's own materials. Associations publish exact dates for the coming season in their handbooks and season manuals, usually over the summer; we record what has been published. Each state's page links to its source.

How the seasons differ

Each association fits the sport into a calendar it already has. Arizona plays alongside tackle football. Nevada starts its regular season in late November. Washington's rules let each school pick one of three windows, so two Washington schools can be playing in different seasons.

Season is easy to get wrong. California's sport is in the fall, but it is often described as a spring sport, and we listed it that way ourselves until September 2026 (correction). If a state's season looks wrong here, tell us at corrections@prepflagfootball.com.

For players who also play club or college-showcase flag football, the high school season sets when you are free for other events. For a state's first championship date and the votes still to come, see the upcoming decisions calendar.

"First state title" is the year of the association's first state championship in the sport where it has held or scheduled one. A dash means none yet, a section-level or season-ending event instead (as in California and Mississippi), or a year we have not yet recorded.
