This site answers one question: has your state sanctioned girls' flag football as a varsity high school sport?

That sounds like it should be easy to look up. It isn't. Over a single summer in 2026, published counts of sanctioned states ranged from nine to 24, because the NFHS, NFL Flag Football, and individual newsrooms each keep their own tally on their own schedule with their own definitions. An athletic director trying to find out where their state stands gets a different answer from every result.

So we keep one table, state that our counting rules are, cite the association's own materials, and stamp every entry with the date a person last checked it.

Why it matters now

Girls' flag football is the fastest-growing high school sport in the country. National participation went from 15,716 in 2021-22 to 102,360 in 2025-26, a 48.7% jump in the most recent year alone, and the number of schools offering it rose from 2,736 to 3,990 in twelve months.
