The 2026-27 MHSAA Handbook lists girls' flag football among the association's recognised girls' sports (7.6.2) and names NFHS Flag Football Rules as its playing rules. Under 7.6.3 a new sport needs interest from 50 percent of the membership and must complete a two-year pilot before final adoption. The sport's own rules say that until 50 percent of member schools compete, an end-of-season tournament determines a season winner, and a plan for a state champion will follow; the same page and the 2026 tournament listing also refer to a state championship, so the championship field is left blank. In 2026 the top 16 teams from eight regions played a first round on 30 April, with quarterfinals through the final on 9 May at Mississippi College. For 2026-27 teams compete in geographic regions set by the MHSAA. MHSAA abbreviation collides with Michigan. Per the New Orleans Saints and NFL, the MHSAA announced the sanctioning on 28 January 2025, with the first season in spring 2025. The MHSAA's 2026-27 sports calendar (updated 2 October 2026) lists girls flag football practice from 2 March 2027, a scrimmage date of 18 March, a first round on 6 May and the championship-column date of 8 May 2027. The MHSAA's 2026-27 regions list 62 schools in 12 regions.
