The RIIL Principals' Committee on Athletics voted 14-0 on 17 August 2026 to sanction girls flag football beginning in spring 2027, after sixteen member schools petitioned under Article 15 of the RIIL Rules and Regulations for it to become a varsity sport with a championship. Seven months earlier, on 27 January 2026, the same committee had denied 5-11-1 a recommendation from the RIIL athletic administrators' association to sanction the sport for spring 2027, and voted 17-0 to form a sub-committee to set standards any new sport would have to meet. Reporting says an earlier recommendation was held for further study in June 2025. The RIIL's own website calls Rhode Island the first New England state to sanction girls high school flag football.
