The CIF Federated Council voted 146-0 in February 2023 to sanction girls flag football effective 2023-24, and the sport is written into the CIF Constitution and Bylaws as the 2100 Series. California is the one verified state with no state championship: CIF states plainly that flag football has no CIF Regional or State Championship and directs schools to their Section Office for playoffs. CIF reported in 2023-24 that the San Francisco, Oakland, Sac-Joaquin, Central Coast, Los Angeles and San Diego sections would hold section championships; the current list across all ten CIF sections has not been confirmed. CIF now points to NFHS Flag Football Rules, having originally adopted NIRSA rules as modified by CIF. The San Francisco Section has sponsored the sport since 2012-13.
