PIAA describes girls flag football as a fully implemented championship sport as of its July 2026 offseason bulletin, played in the spring. The rules exceptions permitted for the inaugural 2026 season have expired and schools must now comply with NFHS Flag Football Rules as written. PIAA appointed a Statewide Girls Flag Football Rules Interpreter in February 2026. Sanctioning followed the Commonwealth reaching at least 100 participating teams. NFL Flag branded footballs and jerseys carrying NFL team logos are not legal for PIAA competition. On 8 October 2026 the PIAA announced that the inaugural PIAA Girls' Flag Football Championships will be held this spring at Penn State Harrisburg, which hosts for four seasons, 2026-27 through 2029-30; the PIAA's statewide rules interpreter's October 2026 bulletin gives the date as Saturday 5 June 2027. The PIAA also named the Baden Perfection F7L-NFHS APEX leather ball as the official ball for district and inter-district postseason play through June 2029.
