Where girls flag football leads after high school
More than a hundred thousand girls played high school flag football last year. The question most of their families ask next is whether it goes anywhere.
It does, and the picture changed several times in 2026. This page records what each governing body has actually decided, with the dates and the documents.
Is there an NCAA championship for women's flag football?
Not yet. Flag football has been an NCAA Emerging Sport for Women since January 2026, and each of the three divisions votes in January 2027 on creating a championship. All three must approve; if they do, the first NCAA championship is projected for spring 2028. The NAIA and NJCAA have already voted to hold national championships.
The short version
Two governing bodies have already voted to make women's flag football a championship sport. The NAIA holds its first national championship in spring 2027. The NJCAA holds its first in the 2027-28 academic year. The NCAA votes in January 2027 on whether to create one; if that passes, the first NCAA championship would be in spring 2028, a few months before flag football's Olympic debut in Los Angeles.
Until those first championships are played, the national events that exist are invitationals.
| Governing body | Status | Since | First championship | Next decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NAIA | Championship sport | 2026-27 | Spring 2027 | Qualification, format and site for the first championship still to be announced |
| NCAA | Emerging sport | 2026 | Projected spring 2028 | All three divisions vote January 2027; all must approve |
| NJCAA | Championship sport (from 2027-28) | 2027-28 | 2027-28 | Final invitational, spring 2027, College of DuPage |
| 3C2A | Emerging sport | 2026-27 | — | Recognised as emerging for up to four years while programmes build toward the threshold |

NAIA — first championship in spring 2027
On 17 June 2026 the NAIA's National Administrative Council approved women's flag football as the association's 30th championship sport, from the 2026-27 academic year. The first NAIA national championship is scheduled for spring 2027; the NAIA has said qualification, format and site will be announced later.
The NAIA was the first college governing body to organise the sport. It treated flag football as an emerging sport from 2021 and as an invitational sport in 2026. It expects 60 member institutions to sponsor the sport in 2026-27.
The 2026 NAIA Women's Flag Football Invitational was held in May at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and won by Warner (Fla.), who beat Keiser (Fla.) 13-6 in the final. Automatic places went to the Sun Conference, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, the GSAC, and a combined grouping of the Appalachian, Crossroads, Mid-South and Wolverine-Hoosier conferences.
College play does not use the NFHS high school rules. The NAIA links a joint NAIA-NJCAA collegiate rules book covering 2025-26 and 2026-27.
NCAA — emerging sport, with a vote in January 2027
Flag football entered the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women programme at the January 2026 NCAA Convention, approved by representatives of all three divisions and effective immediately.
Emerging status is a pathway, not an endpoint. A sport in the programme must reach a minimum of 40 schools sponsoring it at varsity level, and meet minimum contest and participation requirements, to be considered for championship status.
On 19 May 2026 the NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact voted to recommend that Divisions I, II and III sponsor legislation creating a National Collegiate Flag Football Championship, and to establish an NCAA Women's Flag Football Committee from January 2027.
The sequence from here:
- Each division reviews the recommendation and sponsors a proposal by 1 July 2026
- All three divisions vote in January 2027
- All three must approve for a championship to be held
- If approved on that timeline, the first championship would be spring 2028
That last date matters. It would put the first NCAA champion months before the sport's Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games.
Where NCAA schools play now
Before any NCAA championship exists, NCAA schools play in conferences that have added the sport, in a multi-division league, or as independents. Conferences that sponsor women's flag football in 2026-27, or have announced they will, include the MEAC in Division I; Conference Carolinas, the GLIAC and the CACC in Division II; and the SCAC, the Middle Atlantic, the Atlantic East, the United East, the Empire 8 and the American Southwest in Division III.
The largest single league is run by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Funded by a $1 million grant from the Betty Wold Johnson Foundation and the New York Jets, it launched in spring 2026 with 10 schools and adds five more in 2027, drawing on all three NCAA divisions and the USCAA. Its 2026 final was held at the Jets' training center, and later finals are planned for MetLife Stadium. Schools can play in the ECAC league and another conference at the same time.
Some Division I and II programs, including Alabama State and Roberts Wesleyan, play as independents. Our program list shows each checked program's conference.

Is this timeline fast?
The Emerging Sports for Women programme was created in 1994. Eight sports have graduated from it to full championship status since, among them rowing in 1996, ice hockey and water polo in 2000, bowling in 2003, beach volleyball in 2015 and women's wrestling in 2025.
Measured against that history, flag football is moving quickly — it would go from entering the programme to a championship vote in twelve months. Whether the vote passes is a separate question, and one we will record here when it is answered.
NJCAA — first championship in 2027-28
In June 2026 the NJCAA elevated women's flag football to championship status. The first NJCAA national championship will be held in the 2027-28 academic year.
Until then the invitational continues: the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, hosted it in May 2026 and will host the last one in 2026-27. Florida Gateway College has won all four NJCAA invitationals held so far.
Growth at two-year colleges has been fast. The NJCAA says 33 member colleges will sponsor the sport in 2026-27 and expects 37 in 2027-28, against 15 two years earlier. Two-year colleges are a meaningful route for players who want to compete while sorting out academics or finances.
3C2A — California community colleges, emerging sport
California's community colleges compete under their own governing body, the 3C2A, rather than the NJCAA. In May 2026 the 3C2A added women's flag football as an emerging sport from 2026-27. It can remain emerging for up to four years. Once 10 or more member colleges field varsity teams for two consecutive years, it can become a championship sport the following year.
For a California player, that makes a two-year college route a live possibility in a state whose high school federation already sanctions the sport.
What we are not telling you yet
Our college programmes list is being built school by school, and shows a programme only once we have checked it. The governing bodies' own figures put the NAIA at about 60 sponsoring institutions and the NJCAA at 33 for 2026-27, before counting NCAA schools or club teams. A list assembled from recruiting sites and aggregators would be stale and unsourced, and this site is not useful if it works that way.
We are building it from conference and athletics department sources instead. Each programme carries the state it sits in, so a family can see their own state's high school position and the college programmes within reach on the same page.
We also will not tell you which programmes offer athletic aid until the school or the governing body says so. That is the detail families care about most and the one most often wrong elsewhere.
See methodology for how we source and date entries, and the state tracker for high school sanctioning. If a governing body's status here is out of date, email corrections@prepflagfootball.com.
