Board of Directors voted unanimously at its June 2026 meeting to elevate girls flag football to a fully recognised sport for 2026-27, the OHSAA's 29th. In May 2026, before full sanctioning, the OHSAA partnered with the Browns, Bengals and Pro Football Hall of Fame to conduct a state tournament event, won by Macedonia Nordonia. 162 teams competed in spring 2026, up from 20 schools three years earlier. Dates for the 2027 season and tournament were still to be determined at the time of the release. The OHSAA's 2027 season calendar lists first day of coaching 15 February, season start 5 March, tournament entry 15 April, playoffs from 25 April, regional finals 2 May and the state tournament on 8 May 2027 (site not yet named). The OHSAA's April 2026 release counted 162 high schools sponsoring the sport; its 2026-27 divisional alignment lists 195 teams. The first OHSAA state championship was held on 16 May 2026 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.
