Girls flag football is not among the WVSSAC's sanctioned sports, but the association is backing a first season. A flyer on the WVSSAC's flag football page says the SSAC, in partnership with the Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers, supports the growth of girls flag football in West Virginia high schools. A Commanders plan posted on the same page says 2027 will serve as a pilot season, running late March to late May 2027 with at least eight games, and that the WVSSAC requires 32 schools playing before a new sport can be state sanctioned; we have not yet found that rule in the WVSSAC's own rules. The WVSSAC Board's 16 September 2026 minutes record an update on girls flag football from the executive director, with no vote. We will record West Virginia as a pilot once WVSSAC-recognised play begins.
